Data sources
Connect the databases Uptend reads from, and understand which one gets to decide who your users are.
A data source is a connection to a database you already run. Uptend reads from it to build the profiles and analytics in your workspace — and only ever reads. Data sources live under Settings → Data → Data sources.
Only workspace admins can see or change data sources. Other members work with what the sources produce, not the connections themselves.
data-sources-overviewPrimary and additional sources
Every workspace has room for exactly one primary source, plus as many additional sources as you need. The difference is not size or importance — it's authority over who exists.
| Primary source | Additional sources | |
|---|---|---|
| How many | Exactly one per workspace | As many as you like |
| Creates profiles | Yes — every profile comes from here | No |
| Adds to existing profiles | Yes | Yes |
| Rows it can't match | Creates a new profile | Reported and skipped |
The primary source is the database that already answers "who are our users?" — usually the one your product runs on, with the table your sign-up flow writes to. Everything you connect afterwards attaches to profiles that database created.
An additional source that reads a row it can't match to an existing profile doesn't invent one. The row is reported as unmatched and skipped. That's deliberate: it means a second database can never quietly fork your user list into two versions of the same person.
Connect the primary first
The page is ordered the way the product works. Until a primary source exists, the Additional sources section stays locked, because there would be nothing for an additional source to attach to.
Once a primary is connected, the section unlocks and you can add more.
Choose your primary source carefully. It can't be swapped later — every profile in the workspace was created by it, so a replacement would inherit responsibility for people it never saw. To change it you'd disconnect and start over.
What you can connect today
PostgreSQL is the connector available now, and it can take either role: your product database as the primary, a replica or a second service's database as an additional source.
Further down the page you'll see connectors marked Coming soon — Stripe, PostHog, HubSpot, Intercom, Linear and Salesforce. These are what we're building next. They aren't connectable yet, and each will arrive as an additional source: they can tell Uptend a great deal about a person, but none of them is the system that decides a person exists.
Where to go next
- Connect a database — the connection string, what happens when you save it.
- Read-only access — why Uptend can't write to your database, and the least-privilege role if you want one.
- Manage a source — test, pause, replace the credential, or disconnect.
