Manage a source

Check a connection's health, pause it, replace its credential, or disconnect it for good.

Click any connected source on Settings → Data → Data sources to open it. The page gathers everything known about the connection and every action you can take on it.

Read the connection details

The Connection card shows:

  • Connection string — masked, as it has been since you saved it.
  • Status — Connected, Connection failed, Paused, or Not checked.
  • Role — Primary or Secondary, with a sentence explaining what that lets the source do.
  • Access — what the credential you supplied is permitted to do. See Read-only access.
  • Last checked — when Uptend last spoke to the database.
  • Connected as, Readable tables, and Server — what the database reported during the last test.

If the last test failed, the reason appears in a banner at the top of the page rather than being buried in the card.

The schema

The Schema card shows when Uptend last read the database's catalog and how many tables it found. The read runs automatically when you connect; after your database changes, click Refresh schema.

View schema opens the whole capture in a dialog: every table your role can see, with its columns and types, which are primary keys, which point at another table, and how many indexes and update triggers each carries. Filter by table name to find one quickly. It is read-only — the way to change it is to refresh the capture.

Which table becomes profiles, and how each property is computed from it, is not set here. Both are part of the profile's definition and live under Settings → Profiles — see Choose the backing table. The card links there.

Sync

The Sync card shows how often Uptend reads this database, what the last runs did, and a Sync now button. It appears once the source has a backing table; before that it points you to Profiles settings. The full story — the four kinds of read, the refresh cadence for derived values, what a read can and cannot see — is on Sync.

Test the connection

Click Test connection in the page header. Uptend connects, re-reads the server details, and updates the status and access badge.

This is a diagnostic, not a switch. Testing a paused source tells you whether it would work — it doesn't resume it.

Pause and resume

Click Pause to stop Uptend connecting to this database. Use it during a maintenance window, a credential rotation on your side, or while you investigate something.

A paused source keeps everything it has: its profiles, its properties, its history. It just stops being read from — scheduled syncs included — until you click Resume.

Pausing wins over testing. A paused source that tests healthy stays paused, and replacing its connection string doesn't wake it up. Only Resume does.

Replace the connection string

The stored string is masked and can't be read back, so there's no "edit" — you replace it whole.

  1. Open the source and find Replace connection string.
  2. Paste the new connection string.
  3. Click Replace.

Uptend tests the new string, stores it encrypted, and revokes the old credential immediately. Do this when you rotate the password at your end, move the database to a new host, or want to swap in the tighter read-only role.

Disconnect a source

  1. Open the source and scroll to Disconnect.
  2. Click Disconnect and confirm.

This deletes the stored credential permanently and can't be undone. Anything built from the source stops updating. Disconnecting the primary source is the bigger decision — it's the one that created every profile in the workspace.

If you only need to stop reads for a while, pause instead.
